What is Sriracha?
Sriracha is one of those ingredients you either love or hate and if you are not a lover of spicy food you are really not going to like Sriracha. Sriracha is basically a hot red chilli sauce usually made with chili peppers, distilled vinegar, garlic, sugar, and salt. It packs a nice punch of heat in recipes
Here on this side of the Atlantic, we are pretty obsessed with it. Sriracha is used almost as commonly as ketchup.
Substitutes for Sriracha
I recommend trying to source sriracha if you can, rather than trying to substitute as you won't get quite the same flavour.
However if you really can't source it, here are a couple of things that would work okay.
- Sambal Oelek
- Hot Sauce - like Tabasco, Louisiana etc
- Gochujang
Powdered subs are not great because it can make your sauce rather dry, if you do opt for a dry ingredient like chilli powder or cayenne, you would need to add something to compensate the liquid part.
Great ways to use Sriracha
Hesitant to buy an ingredient just for this recipe? Sriracha is so versatile and can be used in so many different recipes to add a bit of heat.
Drizzle it over rice, any protein or one of my favourites is over some perfectly cooked eggs in the morning, be them fried or scrambled, it's really delicious and one to try if you haven't already.
Can I use other protein?
I like to use chicken thighs in this recipe, as they stay nice and tender and add depth of flavour.
If you want to use chicken breast, that will be okay too, just make sure you sear it well to ensure it doesn't release lot of water into the pan which can dilute the sauce.
Other great proteins for this are:
- Pork
- Prawns
Beef I find a bit rich for this sauce. I prefer with with poultry or prawns personally.
Cooking in a Air Fryer
As well as cooking this stove top, you can also cook it in a air fryer. To cook recipes like this, you need an air fryer that has a solid basket otherwise you will need to use some kind of insert like a cake pan or foil tray that fits perfectly in the basket.
I love my Instant Pot Vortex 5.7L Digital Health Air Fryer which has a clear cook window, so you can see how the food is cooking without having to open up the tray.

Sides for Sriracha Chicken
My favourite side for this recipe has to be some jasmine sticky rice, along with some stir fried greens like courgette or zucchini.
Some other great vegetable sides are:
- cucumber
- broccoli
- bok choy
- shredded stir fried cabbage
- mushrooms (I love king oyster)
It's also great with some noodles if you don't fancy rice or oven your favourite potatoes like these oven baked chips or crispy golden potatoes.

This couldn't be quicker to make. Having prepped the garlic and ginger, I put the rice on to cook for ten minutes and started cooking the chicken, all cooked at the same time. Tasted delicious too.

Where can you buy the bottled sauce from please
Shevy (Slimming Eats) says
Most grocery stores will stock it. It should be with the condiments and things like hot sauce (tabasco etc)
