Amazing Chinese Style Black Pepper Beef for you to make and enjoy at home and all ready in less than 20 minutes.
Black Pepper Beef is probably one of my favourite dishes to order from the Chinese, I love that pepper rich sauce that coats the meat and it's perfect over some plain steamed rice.
Gotta love the simple dishes that taste good, right?
This dish is simple in every way, using only a handful of ingredients, you will want to make it again and again.
Crunchy celery is the popular vegetable added to this dish, at least this side of the Atlantic anyway, but if you are not keen on celery, you can replace with another vegetable of your choice, bok choy is a great choice, or some onion and green peppers.
I love the taste of the celery against the peppery beef. It's a really delicious combination.
Don't fancy beef? This dish is great with some chicken too. I recommend using strips of chicken thigh, rather than breast meat though, as chicken thigh will stay nice and tender.

Chinese Black Pepper Beef
Amazing Chinese Style Black Pepper Beef for you to make and enjoy at home and all ready in less than 20 minutes.
Ingredients
- 300g (10.5oz) of frying strip beef
- 2 teaspoon of grated ginger
- 1 clove of garlic, crushed
- 1 tbs of soy sauce
- 3 sticks of celery, chopped
- 1 small onion, sliced
- ¼ cup (4 tbs) of oyster sauce
- ¾ cup (180ml) of beef stock (I use low sodium)
- 1 tbs of cornstarch
- ½ tbs of granulated sweetener (I use sukrin: 1)
- 1 teaspoon of black pepper
- cooking oil spray
Instructions
- Add the beef, soy sauce, ginger and garlic to a bowl and toss to coat.
- Heat a frying pan over a medium high heat with cooking oil spray. Wait for the pan to get hot, then add the beef into the pan and just sear to brown, remove and set aside.
- Wipe the frying pan clean, spray with some more cooking oil spray, add the onion and celery and fry for a couple of minutes.
- Add back in the beef, along with oyster sauce, stock, sweetener and black pepper. Mix the cornstarch with a couple of tablespoons of water and mix to form a slurry. Add this into the sauce and heat until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and vegetables.
- Serve with your choice of sides and enjoy!!

Was really lovely, I replaces oyster sauce with hoisin though so made it half a syn more per portion. ( I don't like oyster sauce) I served with rice and mixed veggies and went down well with the whole family 🙂
Denise says

Chloe says
Is this to serve 2 or 4? Also where do the syns come from i cabt calucualte where the 2 syns per serving are? Not sure if I'm just being blonde haha
Shevy (Slimming Eats) says
The servings are given on the recipe box. The syns come from the cornstarch and the oyster sauce (thick style) which is synned. Enjoy :O)
Donna Irwin says
Hi made the Chinese black pepper all my family loved it .
Sandra says
Has anyone made this in the pressure cooker
Siobhan (Slimming Eats) says
it's such a quick stir fry recipe, it really doesn't require pressure cooking. Enjoy!!
Trevona says
Hi, this looks delicious, however could you please confirm how many this serves? Above the photo it states Yield: serves 4, but in the Nutrition box it says Yield 2. Hope I've bought enough beef!
Shevy (Slimming Eats) says
It should be to serve 2. Thanks for spotting the error.
Trevona says
I made this tonight. It was delicious. As I only had 200 g if beef I added some mushrooms. We both enjoyed it, very tasty
Suzanne says
Very very good. We dont like celery so instead put in carrot green pepper and mushrooms. I also doubled up on the black pepper and garlic and added hoisin as well as oyster (half and half). Served with egg fried rice. Would defo do again. Hubby said it was better than a takeaway!
Lauren says
Made this before and it's delicious... just wondering if it could be done in a slow cooker and how long you would leave it for?
Siobhan (Slimming Eats) says
I should think it will be fine, but I would use stewing beef instead of stir fry beef so the meat is tender. I think stir fry beef would end up over cooked
Eileen dack says
I made this tonight as usual it did not disappoint, the only thing I changed was I used peppers and mushrooms it was absolutely gorgeous look forward to all your recipes thank you.
Pauline says
Just made this and everyone loved it, i put peppers instead of celery, delicious.
